In 2010 alone the city numbered 167.8 thousand. The population and the agglomeration are 486.6 thousand, making it 12th largest in California and 5th in San Francisco. Rapidly developing in the nineteenth century, the town was heavily damaged during the 1906 earthquake, and since then the population growth has been very slow
