The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers a full range of undergraduate majors and is the only historically black institution in the Southern state with the highest percentage of minority applicants.
The campus has been the site for many of the nation's most important civil rights events, including the March on Washington, the March on Montgomery and the Mayflower Riots. According to the most recent U.S. Census data, Chattanooga, which is about 60 percent African-American, has a population that stands at about 3,100 people. It also has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation, at 8 percent. But it also has a reputation as an arts campus, boasting top-tier programs such as dance and drama and a thriving musical community known as the "Cajun Roll."
The university opened the College of Fine Arts in 2004 and now has more than 1,300 undergraduate majors and more than 1.4,000 graduate and professional studies programs. The campus includes more than 40 colleges and is home to the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Science.
